Company history

CVI Automotive began life as Classic Volvo Imports in London in March 1988. Enthusiasm for the Volvo models built after the war led Mikael Sällström to re-build, buy and sell, and generally repair a whole host of classic Volvos before finally deciding to go full-time into the business in 1988. The recession that hit the UK in late 1989 and lasted for more than 5 years was to prove decisive in terms of our move into re-manufacturing items that were becoming too expensive to buy from the usual sources, or simply getting hard to find. Please take a look at the "Product profile" page to see what type of items we have had made.

Our relations with Genuine Classic Parts (GCP), who in 1996 were contracted by Volvo to take over the handling of genuine spares for the older range of Volvo cars, has strengthened over the years and we are now a major supplier to them as well as being a regular customer. We often assist them with questions of technical importance and have used many of our established contacts to re-manufacture some of the parts that are now offered as genuine replacements via Volvo dealerships the world over.

Joginder SinghInitially servicing and repair work formed the main part of our business, though we regularly bought and sold cars and parts. One very welcome customer at this time was Joginder Singh, the winner of the 1965 East African Safari Rally in a PV 544 which the Volvo works team had left behind in Kenya after crashing it in the early stages of the 1964 event. He had been living in the UK since the early '80s and finally decided to airfreight over the original car, for which we later supplied many parts in order to bring it up to scratch.
